Say hello to
Carmela
“Hi, I'm Carmela! I'm based in Victoria, BC, where I'm a fourth-year student at the University of Victoria studying biology and psychology with a focus in neuroscience. Outside of class, I work as an undergraduate researcher in a neuroscience lab, teach adaptive climbing, and volunteer as a French-language crisis text line responder.”
I love volunteering with SNIWWOC because of the way it centres community care and creates spaces where Indigenous women and women of colour feel genuinely seen and supported. As someone passionate about health equity and community wellbeing, the work feels deeply aligned with why I want to go into medicine.
What Carmela loves about volunteering at SNIWWOC
An event that's stayed with me is the Healthcare Leadership Summit. Being part of a day dedicated to amplifying BIPOC voices in healthcare, and watching attendees connect with mentors, share their experiences navigating the healthcare system, and leave feeling empowered to take up space in these fields, reminded me how powerful it is when community and healthcare come together.
Carmela’s most memorable & impactful SNIWWOC event
"Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare."
— Audre Lorde
