FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SNIWWOC launches Oral Histories project and seeks Elders to speak “truth to power” for this inter-generational transcription of Indigenous cultural tales.
Victoria, B.C., Canada. Friday November 19th, 2021 : The Support Network for Indigenous Women and Women of Color(SNIWWOC) is actively recruiting Elders and Knowledge-Keepers for their new Oral Histories: Bridging the Generational Divide project. The project is funded by the First Peoples' Cultural Council, who work with Indigenous communities in B.C. to build the vitality of our cherished Languages, Arts and Cultural Heritage – today and for the future. The goal of the project is to create stories as a written or audio- video collection to share with the community as a resource and a way to preserve culture.
The project aims to create strong community bonds; empower Elders and Youth; and record historical stories. This is a PAID opportunity. For each completed story, the Elder will be awarded a $550 honorarium.
The project provides Elders an opportunity to share their stories in original storytelling form; and for Youth a deeper insight into their culture. The stories can be whatever the Elder deems appropriate to share. This allows the Elders an opportunity to voice their experiences and knowledge in their own words.
Elders must be comfortable with being recorded, have a reliable means of transportation to meetings, be responsive to phone calls and able to work well with Youth. A “learn and share” phone call will be conducted to get to know the Elder and ensure full understanding of the project.*
These kinds of artistic resources play a vital role in Indigenous reclamation; and will work as a connection for the broader settler community, who may not have the ability to communicate with Elders or Knowledge-keepers. The deadline for Elders and Knowledge-keepers has been extended until November, 30th, 2021.
Please apply TODAY by emailing Cheyenne at: info@sniwwoc.ca or by leaving a voicemail, clearly stating your name, contact number and “Elder interested in Oral Histories project” at 250-277-2545 (SNIWWOC office).
